At long last, the report from the Iraq Study Group has finally been delivered. And what do you want to bet nothing changes at all? The problem is that you still have Bush-Cheney calling the shots, and they're determined to "stay the course" (or whatever Tony Snow's current euphemism is). What an ugly situation this has become -- and it continues to get uglier and uglier, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel even in sight. Not only are there no good solutions, there aren't even any just OK solutions. Because of this incredible mis-adventure, there are only bad and very bad solutions. Should we get out? That's a no-brainer -- much of the violence there is a direct result of our very presence there. But how do we keep the entire country, and possibly the entire MidEast, from erupting in even more horrid violence when we do start a pullback? We're damned if we do and damned if we don't. As Al Gore has rightly noted, this has been "the worst strategic mistake in the entire history of the United States". However, let's not forget that there were a number of people who were smart enough to see what a monumental mistake we were getting ready to make before we made it -- Al Gore, Howard Dean, Russ Feingold, and Nancy Pelosi just to name a few. These are the people who understood the situation then, and these are the people who should be in charge of getting us out of Iraq now. Alas, though, we still have Bush-Cheney for the next two years -- even if they were given the perfect plan and even if they were convinced that it should be executed, they still couldn't pull it off. Look at their track record -- they haven't gotten one single thing right in six years. To think that they could possibly accomplish anything positive is absurd. What really needs to happen is to impeach both Bush and Cheney and replace them with some of these people who did have the foresight to see what was going to happen, people who obviously understand the situation, people who are actually capable of extricating us from this mess with the least amount of damage. But I don't suppose that has much of a chance of happening. So alas, it probably won't be until the 2008 Presidential election that we'll start to see a true resolution to the Iraq situation. And in the meantime, American troops will continue to die for no reason at all. That's criminal.
